You can get to Islay by sea or air using either public transport or your own boat or plane. Which ever way you choose it will need some pre-thought and planning.

By Sea

For most of its history the only way to get to Islay has been by sea and it is still the most common method of transport.

Coming by sea for most people means using the Caledonian Macbrayne Ferry which takes just over 2 hours. More details are on the following pages: Winter Ferry - Summer Ferry.

If you are using your own boat Port Ellen has recently had fully serviced pontoons installed for visiting yachts, and other moorings are available.

CityLink runs a coach service from Glasgow which links with the ferry service. Full details are available on their website. Here is the Summer 2004 timetable until 3rd October 2004 in Acrobat .pdf format: CityLink Timetable

By Air

Islay is twenty minutes flying time from Glasgow from where there are connections to the rest of Europe and the World.
